Harness the power of artificial intelligence to revolutionize your business operations and drive innovation. Explore the brilliance of AI LLM! For art and culture experts, artificial intelligence is not a nightmare, but rather a source of hope for reaching new target groups. AI will continue to develop and also requires the relevant skills of those involved in the cultural sector, states the North Rhine-Westphalia Cultural Council in a written report for an expert hearing in the state parliament on Thursday. Great Opportunities for AI in culture In marketing, for example, artificial intelligence can calculate target groups, reach, and acceptance, according to the Cultural Council. With AI or virtual reality technologies such as AR glasses, museums, theatres, and artists could create virtual spaces in which visitors could explore works of art, historical sites, and galleries. AI can provide individualized information about exhibits, incorporate new elements into tours, and operate multilingually. Such interactive exhibitions and installations also appeal to new target groups. The Cultural Council encouraged art universities to become more involved in the field of artificial intelligence and suggested the creation of an interdisciplinary “AI Competence Centre in Art and Culture”. Artificial intelligence in art This is how the internationally acclaimed artist Refik Anadol creates overwhelming, monumental data images using artificial intelligence. AR glasses are increasingly being used in theatres and operas, offering viewers additional information, new camera perspectives, or even animated imagery. When restoring artworks, AI can help digitally reconstruct damaged or faded artworks. Overall, AI expands the possibilities for artistic expression and opens up new avenues for interaction between artists and audiences, says Marcus Lobbes, director of the Dortmund Academy for Theatre and Digitality. However, “a balance must be found between technological innovation and the preservation of human creativity and authenticity”. Legal framework for artificial intelligence At the same time, the Cultural Council and other experts are calling for a labelling requirement and a legal framework for AI content. In the future, stricter rules for the use of artificial intelligence will apply in the European Union (EU). Negotiators from the European Parliament and the EU states agreed on this in December. According to the EU Parliament, this is the world's first AI law to be introduced. The Cultural Political Society sees the lack of agreements on payment or payment models for intellectual property in the sense of copyright that is used for AI as a central challenge. According to a definition by the European Parliament, artificial intelligence is the ability of a machine to imitate human abilities such as logical thinking, learning, planning, and creativity. AI systems are therefore able to adapt their actions by analyzing the consequences of previous actions and working autonomously.
AI omnipresent in everyday life According to Professor Pamela Scorzin from the Design Department at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences, the generation of deceptively real "deepfakes" - such as the image of the Pope with a hip Balenciaga jacket - has long conquered the Internet. AI image generators could transform text instructions or existing images into novel works or styles in just a few seconds. “AI is omnipresent in our everyday lives and “invisibly” embedded in many communication tools such as smartphones,” writes Scorzin. This raised questions about authorship and copyright. Scorzin advocated not immediately placing calls for bans or restrictions first but also pointing out new business models and development potential with AI-based tools. Making culture fit for AI Experts see that Germany still has some catching up to do compared to other countries when it comes to dealing with artificial intelligence. The Cultural Political Society called for further training on the possibilities and techniques of AI, but also on copyright and personal and usage rights. The loss of jobs and financial losses due to AI also need to be critically monitored. The experts agree that media literacy to recognize AI-generated content in text, images, and sound must be strengthened through educational offerings.

News Editor & Author: Rick Anthony MIT's Improbable AI Lab, a branch of the renowned Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), has introduced a groundbreaking AI multimodal framework, named Compositional Foundation Models for Hierarchical Planning (HiP). This AI system utilizes three distinct foundation models, each trained on language, vision, and action data, to assist robots in formulating and executing intricate plans for household, construction, and manufacturing tasks. Unlike traditional multimodal AI models such as RT2, HiP employs three separate foundation models, each specializing in different data modalities. This novel approach eliminates the need for access to paired vision, language, and action data, streamlining the planning process and enhancing transparency. AI Breakthrough: HiP's potential applications extend to various domains, including household chores like book placement and dishwashing, as well as complex construction and manufacturing tasks like material stacking and sequencing. The AI system has undergone rigorous testing, demonstrating superior performance compared to similar frameworks in manipulation tasks The CSAIL team evaluated HiP's proficiency in various scenarios. In one test, the Ai robot was tasked with stacking differently coloured blocks and adjusting its plans when certain colours were unavailable. Another challenge involved arranging objects in a box, with HiP adapting its plans to account for dirty items. The third demonstration showcased the AI’s system's ability to ignore unnecessary objects and complete kitchen sub-goals effectively. HiP operates on a three-pronged hierarchy, leveraging a large language model (LLM) at the base to ideate and develop abstract task plans. The AI system then integrates a video diffusion model to understand the environment, refining the task plan further. Breakthrough - Finally, an egocentric action AI model maps out the execution of tasks within the long-horizon goal, using a sequence of first-person images! NVIDIA AI researcher Jim Fan commended the AI Breakthrough, stating, "This work decomposes the complex task of embodied agent planning into three constituent models: a language reasoner, a visual world AI model, and an action planner. It makes a difficult decision-making problem more tractable and transparent."
The CSAIL team envisions further enhancements to HiP, potentially incorporating pre-trained AI models for touch and sound processing to improve planning capabilities. While acknowledging the current limitations due to the lack of high-quality video foundation AI models, the researchers highlight HiP's cost-effectiveness and potential for real-world applications in robotics. The team's AI Breakthrough was presented at the 2023 Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) and received support from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency, the U.S. Army Research Office, the U.S. Office of Naval Research Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives, and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. |
