Senior Reporter & Author: Lax Marshal AI: Artificial intelligence and its challenges for politicsDemocratic policy must take control of AI and its effects as soon as possible. AI - Explore the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence in diverse industries. Uncover the latest AI developments & applications of Artificial Intelligence, showcasing AI's role in shaping the future of Tech, AI technology & business innovation. Artificial intelligence (IA) is changing politics, without us being fully aware of when these changes have occurred, how far they will go, and the impact they will have. AI helps streamline some automated processes, allowing efficiencies that would not have been possible otherwise. But, as has happened with any technological revolution, it also brings with it ethical, professional, and democratic challenges on which politics must reflect ... and act. These are some of the challenges. 1. New limits between the true and the false. AI is transforming the values and attributes with which we identify what is true and what is a lie. This blurring of the limits of truth is a danger to democratic dialogue. We saw one of the most prominent examples in March 2023, when alleged photographs of Donald Trump emerged being arrested. The images served to mobilize his base and generate conversation about the various judicial processes he faced. They were possible, but they were false. 2. The risk of impersonation. AI can replace people in creation, but — even more dangerous — can also supplant their identity. Deepfakes are not new but are now increasingly difficult to identify and easier to do. A few months ago, for example, a false conversation between two Slovak public figures caused alarm during the election weekend. The impersonation of identity is an extraordinary challenge for free, open, and democratic societies. 3. Technological homogenization. AI works from a synthesis of information and patterns that are efficient but can lead to a loss of nuances, differences, and diversities. The depersonalization and standardization of the contents and products generated are a latent risk for any society. Proof of this was given in Porto Alegre, where, unknowingly, a law drafted by ChatGPT was passed. If this type of practice were repeated, the regulations could lack the specific characteristics so necessary to serve the law and justice. Efficient homogenization tends to single thinking without dissonance. 4. Technological determinism. As a consequence of the above, the loss of free will, the ability for error — and, with it, for learning — can condition our lives and ideas. The danger is that these tools are not used as an aid to streamline and improve but as a shortcut to avoid tasks that we should do, as is happening in some schools. The result would be the decline of creativity and critical thinking, which would become a fundamental barrier to the full exercise of citizenship and democracy. 5. Increased inequality. According to a study by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the incorporation of AI will affect almost 40% of jobs worldwide, a percentage that will increase in advanced economies. Furthermore, the gap between countries and social inequality is expected to widen. All this will impact the capacity of democratic politics and governments to attend to these profound asymmetries and their social consequences. What can democratic politics do? You should take control of AI and its effects as soon as possible. A majority of citizens are aware of the complexity of the situation and consider regulations necessary. A report by the Artificial Intelligence Policy Institute shows that 56% of Americans believe that an agency should be created to monitor AI, and 8 out of 10 think that companies cannot regulate themselves. However, in the past year, it has become clear that laws and governments cannot run at the same speed as technology. In the United States, at the end of October, the first decree to regulate AI was approved and, in Europe, negotiations to agree on a first regulation came in December. It was a historical milestone, yes, and it could be the first law on artificial intelligence, but some experts are not very optimistic about its usefulness, since it is still missing for its entry into force. The policy is late, insufficient, slow, and without real punitive capacity against possible regulatory breaches. Private responsibility also becomes the first step in addressing these challenges and preventing democracies from being used as laboratories. In this regard, ChatGPT has taken a first step by announcing a plan to prevent electoral abuse. We need more and more decisive steps in this direction: the self-regulation (of the parts) and the regulation (of the general interest) must be complementary and possible in the face of the limitations of both to imbricate the unleashed horse of artificial technology. As effective regulations arrive, each use and each new challenge of technology must be rigorously evaluated, and a deep and deep social and political debate generated. The policy must lead large public-private partnerships to defend the general interest in the development of AI, which is also the only interest that allows the dynamism of the markets. Without society, there is no market. And without limits, there is no democracy.
Senior Editor & Author: Alexander Ellington AI, or artificial intelligence, refers to computer systems mimicking human intelligence, learning from data, & performing tasks autonomously. Phrases like "As an AI language model" or "I'm sorry, but I cannot fulfil this request" have become red flags, signalling the infiltration of AI into content creation. The comical yet ominous nature of these messages reflects the broader trend of AI-authored spam, necessitating increased awareness and vigilance among users. The Proliferation of AI-Generated Spam: A Threat to Online Credibility Mike Caulfield, a researcher at the University of Washington, emphasizes the educational aspect of recognizing and addressing AI-generated content. As AI language tools gain popularity, concerns mount over the surge in spammy, low-quality content that poses a threat to the credibility of online information. The unintentional violations of platform policies, such as plagiarism and fake engagement, underscore the need for effective regulation. AI's Impact across the Internet: Uncovering Hidden Content Beyond X and Amazon, AI-generated error messages infiltrate various corners of the internet. NewsGuard analysts discovered numerous websites, masquerading as news outlets, featuring error messages recognized from ChatGPT. AI on Google, eBay, and Beyond: The Widespread Reach
Google searches reveal that AI-generated error messages extend beyond specific platforms, infiltrating eBay listings, blog posts, and digital wallpapers. The pervasive nature of AI-generated content poses challenges for online platforms, requiring a multi-faceted approach to mitigate its impact. The detection of AI fakery in diverse online spaces underscores the urgency of addressing this issue at a broader level. OpenAI's Response and Policies: Navigating the Challenges OpenAI acknowledges the challenges posed by the misuse of its AI language tools and emphasizes continuous refinement of usage policies. The combination of automated systems, human review, and user reports aims to identify and address policy violations effectively. OpenAI's commitment to preventing misinformation and false engagement reflects the organization's proactive stance in mitigating the unintended consequences of AI-generated content. Addressing the Broader Issue: Beyond Individual Responsibility Activists like Cory Doctorow shed light on the broader issue, emphasizing that individuals and small businesses are victims of a larger scam. The glorification of AI as a path to easy profit creates a deceptive landscape, where AI giants benefit while those generating spam face consequences. The challenge lies in finding a balance that prevents the misuse of AI tools while fostering ethical and responsible use. In conclusion, the surge of AI-generated content represents a transformative shift in the online landscape, necessitating collective efforts from platforms, regulators, and users to navigate its challenges. As technology advances, the imperative to strike a balance between innovation and responsible use becomes more pressing, ensuring a trustworthy and authentic online experience for all users. Senior Reporter & Author: Lax Marshal Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Series Unveils Groundbreaking AI Integration Artificial Intelligence: View Samsung's Galaxy S24 series, a game-changer in SmartPhones. With AI integration, titanium casing, & cutting-edge features, Samsung leads the innovation race. Samsung are the first Smartphone makers to use Artificial Intelligence. Samsung unveils Galaxy S24 series with groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence integration, aiming to redefine Smartphone experiences. The flagship Ultra model introduces a titanium casing, enhanced camera system, and advanced AI features. Samsung responds to market challenges, while Apple and Google remain in the Artificial Intelligence race. Seoul, South Korea - In a dazzling display of technological prowess, Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled its highly anticipated Galaxy S24 line-up during the annual Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Renowned as the world's leading Smartphone manufacturer, Samsung is placing a significant bet on artificial intelligence (AI) to propel its sales to new heights in the coming year. The Galaxy S24 series, comprising the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24, is poised to redefine the way users interact with their Smartphone’s. This strategic move towards AI integration is a response to the industry's ongoing challenge of standing out in an increasingly saturated market, where innovation has plateaued in recent years. The flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra, boasting a generous 6.8-inch display and priced at $1,299.99, is breaking new ground with a titanium casing, available in an array of colours including gray, black, violet, and yellow. Additional titanium hues like green, blue, and orange are exclusively offered on Samsung.com. The 6.2-inch Galaxy S24, priced at $799.99, and the 6.7-inch Galaxy S24+, priced at $999, is available in onyx black, marble gray, cobalt violet, and amber yellow. Samsung's commitment to elevating user experiences is evident in its decision to embed generative Artificial Intelligence directly into the devices, eliminating the need for reliance on cloud services. This approach significantly reduces lag time, ensuring smoother and more responsive interactions. The integration of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform further amplifies the power of generative AI through its robust Artificial Intelligence Engine. Jitesh Ubrani, an analyst at market research firm IDC, commented on the current landscape of AI implementation in Smartphone’s, stating, "A lot of Artificial Intelligence implementation today is somewhat gimmicky, and Samsung, along with other vendors, don't have a whole lot to gain from adding these features, rather they probably stand to lose more if they were to exclude AI altogether." This unveiling follows a recent report by market research firm IDC, revealing that Apple surpassed Samsung in Smartphone shipments for the last quarter. The report noted, "The last time a company not named Samsung was at the top of the Smartphone market was 2010, and for 2023, it is now Apple." The Galaxy S24 series promises an AI-packed experience, enhancing existing features with intelligent capabilities. Samsung's suite of live translate products now enables real-time conversation translation via a split-screen view, even when standing next to someone else. The keyboard has been upgraded to translate messages in real-time across 13 languages. Samsung Notes receives a makeover with pre-made formats to organize note jotting effectively. In the automotive realm, Android Auto, utilizing generative AI, now allows users to request message summaries or suggest replies via voice commands. Online searches become more personalized, with users able to long-hold the home button and interact with the screen to gather additional information about what they see. The camera system undergoes significant changes as well. The Galaxy S24 Ultra's Quad Tele System, featuring a new 5-times optical zoom lens, pairs seamlessly with the 50MP sensor, offering magnification up to 10 times. Nightography capabilities are enhanced, and the AI-powered Edit Suggestion tool enables subtle tweaks to photos, such as correcting crooked shots or repositioning objects. Samsung ensures transparency in the use of generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) to modify images by introducing watermarks on the image and in metadata. While AI features in Smartphone’s are not entirely novel, Samsung's global reach is expected to bring greater awareness to the possibilities of AI integration. Google's Pixel line, with its latest Pixel 8 lineup launched in October 2023 has Artificial Intelligence features, but it remains a niche product with a global market share of about 1%, according to data from ABI Research.
As anticipation builds for the iPhone 16 launch in September, rumours suggest Apple may introduce new Siri features powered by AI in the release of iOS 18. Speculation also surrounds the possibility of on-device Generative Artificial Intelligence features being exclusive to iPhone 16 models, thanks in part to Apple's custom chips. In the words of Jitesh Ubrani from IDC, "Apple's silence on all things AI speaks volumes as many in the industry believe that Apple is potentially lagging." However, he notes that none of Samsung's new Artificial Intelligence features will be the primary selling point, indicating that the competition in the Smartphone market is poised for an exciting evolution. Agencies must ensure that AI algorithms respect copyright and intellectual property laws when using external data sources. Obtaining necessary rights and permissions is crucial, especially when training internal AI systems. Human Oversight and Control While AI automates various SEO tasks, human oversight remains indispensable. Continuous monitoring and analysis of AI outputs help identify potential issues, ensuring ethical practices and preventing blind adherence to AI recommendations. Human intervention is essential for validating responses and content generated by AI. Learning and Improvement
AI implementation demands a commitment to ongoing learning and improvement. Staying informed about emerging technologies, evolving ethical frameworks, and industry best practices is essential. Agencies can enhance their AI systems by monitoring performance, incorporating unbiased data, and refining algorithms. Environmental Impact The environmental impact of AI, driven by substantial energy consumption, is a pressing concern. Agencies must optimize energy use by exploring renewable sources and adopting energy-efficient hardware and algorithms to minimize ecological footprints. Striking the Right Balance Achieving an ethical balance between AI utilization and human intervention is paramount for harnessing the full potential of AI in SEO. Transparency, bias mitigation, user privacy, human oversight, environmental impact considerations, and a commitment to continuous learning collectively contribute to building an ethical AI framework. Stay informed on OpenAI's latest innovations & groundbreaking AI developments, shaping the future of technology. Plus, read about Sam Altman & AI! Speaking on the occasion of the last Davos Forum, the boss of OpenAI conditioned the development of AI to advances in the energy field. If we want the miracle ChatGPT to give birth to other more impressive miracles in the future, OpenAI will have to work very seriously on the development of extremely abundant energy sources. This is the message Sam Altman wanted to convey, while he was participating in the 2024 edition of the World Economic Forum in Davos. AI requires new sources of energy There is always interesting news at the Davos Forum, even when speaking on the margins of this annual meeting. So, from a statement collected by Reuters with Sam Altman, who was participating in a Bloomberg event, we learn that the future of AI will be conditioned by the energy that we can allocate to it. According to the boss of OpenAI, the energy consumption of this technology is higher than expected. Consequently, to allow it to be developed and then used fully, it will be necessary to succeed beforehand in « pierced » significant in areas such as solar energy, and its storage, or even nuclear fusion. Will energy be the limit? There is no way to get there without a breakthrough, he said. The thirty-something is particularly interested in nuclear fusion, an area in which he is already personally involved, since in 2021 he invested $375 million in an American company dedicated to nuclear fusion, Helion Energy. It is also a partner of Microsoft, a giant itself partner of OpenAI. The question of the energy consumption of artificial intelligence was asked quickly after the hatching of chatbot like ChatGPT or Bard, on which search requires almost ten times more energy than a classic Google engine. We can then imagine that the models that will be produced by OpenAI in the future should be even more energy-consuming, which would justify Sam Altman's concern.
